state of confusion

Beach People of Marine Street

They put up with stale studios
and beat-up bungalows,
pour every last shell through slippery palms --
all to plant feet like piers.
They stay for the low rumble
of a constant lullaby,
for water dreams
and green-flash sunsets.

Perched on the sea wall with Maui Jim
badges over dried-apple eyes,
they tip breakfast beers
and scoff at salmon-pink tourists,
the crowded boardwalk,
the homeless.

Beach faces are interchange with those of my past.
The scruffy kid scrapping for change is anonymous:
he has been many.

That young blonde with purple butterflies on her shoulder blades
still has chance left in her,
but already she bears a mad woman’s presence.
I recognize her as the bag lady of 1984 –
the one with boys inside her head
and horsetail hair.

She climbs through an open bedroom window,
yells out a man’s name. A few minutes later
she descends, bikini-butt first,
looks at the sea with freshly stoned eyes.

I hear an old lady’s cackle.

The guys have nothing on you
when it comes to giving descriptive
mannerisms to those you watch...

Excellent reading, this!

I am reminded of the considerable differences that exist between our several coastal regions. Nicely done, Corinne. Bob

Thank you Sunshine lady! 24 hours later, I realize that there's something missing from this. Back to the editing board!

Thanks Bob. Yeah, where the beach is easily accessible and near the city, people will congregate. The Northwest is lucky that it developed inland and that the beaches are so remote.

Thank you Enchantress!

Thanks Iliana!

This is just too good to be real...
I am on my way into the archives to see what else I have missed.

I AM smiling...
And tht fact should be enough to cause you to worry.
