There was a man who walked his bird
counted on it for a magic word,
up and down the neighbourhood
thought it would fly away...it could!

The bird had climbed upon a shoulder
or to a head when it was bolder.
Now the wings were not clipped, they'd say
so it couldn't get impatient and fly away...

It could have a mina or a cockatiel
that sound out words, oh so real,
here was a parrot of colorful feathers
accompanied the man under fair weather

Bird on a shoulder worth two on a boulder
from a curved beak I'd hear it speak,
"Take me for a walk, today's a nice day
I'll stay on for the ride rather than fly away."

Passers-by had never seen parrots on shoulders
thought it would fly away if it were bolder,
say classic stuff like, 'Polly wants a cracker',
the name wasn't Polly and crackers didn't matter.
