an akward state of mind

Happiness is life
everyday,
the small things that make you smile
on the inside,
The things we take for granted
as if they’re normal and planned,
when really they are golden treasures
uncovered
over and over again.

Happiness is
a hot shower
in a cold, cold house;
A chocolate milkshake
at three in the morning;
Fresh warm towels soft from the dryer
Or hearing your favorite song
when you turn on the radio.

It is
an open lane at the grocery store
and no waiting in line or
Finding the shirt you wanted
half price,
Getting a letter from a far missed friend
Or a long-distance phone call
and talking too long,

Laughing so hard you can’t breathe
and your cheeks hurt
Or laughing at yourself before someone else can.
Giggling over something you know is stupid
but, just between us, it’s funny
Or laughing for absolutely no reason at all.

Midnight phone calls and keeping your voice low,
Waking up from a bad dream
safe, knowing it’s not real
Or waking up early from a good sleep
knowing you can dream a while longer,

Singing as loudly as you want in an empty house,
Running through a sprinkler
on the hottest summer day
And riding the best rides
over and over.

It’s swinging on swings,
Toes in the sand,
Cookies and milk on Christmas Eve
And watching the sunrise through a misty dawn.

Happiness is
getting out of bed every morning,
not knowing what this new
beautiful day may hold,
and still being able to smile
for the last.
