in the shadows

I had a lover for a while,
many years ago,
who would only take me to her bed
when she was drunk;
being young,
I thought this was great
for a while.
She'd start drinking,
I would smile,
she'd drink more
knowing I'd caught on to her plans for the night;
of course I was psyched when I was right
and crushed when I was wrong,
though I was rarely wrong
about this,
and at the age I was back then,
most men are only life support for glands
and a few other things just hanging around.
She would make a sound
way back in her throat,
a soft purring growl,
somewhere past the fourth or fifth drink,
and in my hormone addled brain
I would think, "Yeah!  Tonight's working out fine."
It took me a while to shine the light of reason
on this relationship,
but when I did,
I felt sad thinking we could have skipped all the fake socializing
and just cut to the chase.
That was about the time I realized,
that for her,
while the sex apparently was great
when she was drunk,
I simply wore the wrong man's face.

that doesn't happen
with just the young...

and unfortunately
it happens much too frequently.

"I simply wore the wrong man's face."

Yes, sadly this happens too often.
And, not only to the young.
Excellent write.

I can understand that....hope the faces are straight for you now. Mine stays straight most of the time, but sometimes I just can't manage it, being who I am....but I usually last long enough to be seen as the right fellow.

...or maybe it's a trick of the lighting around here. Either way, I'll take it!

I cannot imagine a relationship like that-it would hurt on so many levels. Of course, young men are sometimes impervious. It's a necessity for the survival of the species, I think.

There isn't anything that hurts a heart or destroys a soul more than knowing you're just the one THERE not the one treasured... it's more than enough to make the wrong face melt under the weight of tears.

I had a husband like that....had to be drunk first...eventually I found myself hoping he would pass out before, and many times he did.  So sad!
