in the shadows

What is it about Spring
that scratches me
where I don't itch?

When I faced each day alone,
for hire to the highest bidder,
I was anything I chose to be,
without seasons,
seizing life each day,
howling with demonic glee.

Now life,
and all its forms
of soft renewal bursting out
all around
anywhere I turn,
should do something
to clear my head
of Winter's smaller thoughts.

I ought to be able to rejoice
and shout the way new flowers do,
saluting the same sun and sky
they struggled
through the overlays of earth to reach.

The world is teaching
and I find most days
I still am sitting in the back,
struggling with the overlays
of all the petty garbage
I let others pour on top of me.

Why can I not be as free
as when I faced each day alone,
free as any one single joyful flower
can achieve with purity?

This particular spring has given me a new sense of childlike freedom, unencumbered by distress and unchained by thoughts. Wish you could join me.

PS
The dogwood is in FULL bloom as well as the purple and white lilacs side by side, and in a few days I'll have a magnificent display of white azeleas across the front

The internal rhyming and flow of the poem is worth reading over and over, not to mention the message.  I feel the same way sometimes -- just when I think I've learned something, I get slapped on the hand and sent to first grade again!  Thanks for this thoughtful write.

you crawl into my head and take the thoughts I haven't been able to write or express..thanks

I think that flowers only live for the day of blooming, forgetting the struggle it was to find nourishment and the strength to push up....so I guess to learn from them is the trick...not easy to forget the past though.

Those who ask like you do, always learn.
The purity of the soul is safe even under tons of garbage.
This is very beautiful and thought provoking.

Come walk
by the spring
with me...
we'll let the tones
ring clear

and free.

I don't think "free" is a synonym for "alone"..is it?

I don't think anyone can express the thoughts you do so well..

I don't know if there is an answer to this..
just take it one day at a time.
Loved this one...
