Elapsing, Eclipsing, Evolving

Why should I fly?
What does the sky hold
beyond the obvious
wisps of clouds
and the occasional
echo of migrating ducks
escaping winter's scowl?

What worth is there
in wishes for wings?
I’m not built for feathers
or halos or kite strings
or other elusive things
that don’t fit in
my comfort zone.

I’m connected
from the ground up
and it’s only whimsy
that keeps my roots
from settling deeper;
besides I prefer
crawling on my belly
through the dirt.

Call it primal
or maybe filthy,
but I know where I am
and I know I can’t fall
~from here~

I’m at the base, the bottom
beginnings and endings
and I'll be damned
if the ashes call for me.
I’m going to lay right here
and listen to footsteps
eroding me on their
climb to the top.

I'll be here waiting
to catch falling satellites,
‘cause what goes up
will always come down;
somewhere,
somehow.
But there’s no shame in open arms
they're all we have,
and grasping sand
can be just as poetic
as gracing the winds.

Things look a lot less lofty from here
But at least I know it’s real
and reality was all I ever needed.

muted,
I really like the idea behind this!  YOu expressed everything so well-loved the part compared the grasping sand to the gracing winds. Your last three lines complete it nicely.

Wonderful write Dawn...I too prefer to be grounded.
Very much enjoyed, and love the ending.

While I was reading this I thought, muted is lady who cannot be pigeon-holed and lives her life how she sees fit.

Enjoyed!

Dawn, I would prefer to stay grounded...out on the sand ....at the beach, by the water....if Gary could be there with me all the time......

But, since he can't, I can't, so...we have to fly every now and then.....yes, sometimes in our minds.....

I believe that whichever one it takes in each persons life to survive in their own world is what they should do.

Very good writing, sweet lady...it made me think and that's a good thing.

Very very nice...

But this part

"I’m at the base, the bottom
beginnings and endings
and I'll be damned
if the ashes call for me.
I’m going to lay right here
and listen to footsteps
eroding me on their
climb to the top."

My favorite
