I Have no Garden was something you once declared
But with unforgettable poems you have shared
Bare Root Roses, The Lilies and Orange County Snow
Conjuring cathedral quiet of Fern Grotto
And White Bud, stubborn Oleander and Nightgold
Appear vividly on our screens, for you have told
Sensitive Plant secrets long kept by Flowers Of Love
As They Open to cries Of Crow And Mourning Dove

You’re the master of free verse but Of Tone And Time
Wrap The Man and I Am show your talent with rhyme
Cement, I Want (self-duet!), To His Koi Mistress
Demonstrate without a doubt that you are the best!
You’ve taught the importance and finesse of format
With boy, and gravel, Fading, charming Balloon Hat,
Butterfly Talk, The Sand - superb is What You Do
And you are unequaled when it comes to haiku!

From heartbreak to humor, broad is the spell you cast
I weep for Beachcombing, ponder Piano’s Last
Feel the peace of Everhome, (pray its time is far)
Hear waves caressing sands of Corona Del Mar
Remember the value of Coins In The Sand
Give my sincere respect to Utility Man
Admire defiance in Note To San Andreas
And smirk each time I think of A New Blond Waitress

You shared Kenneth Patchen and On Reading Li Po,
Yearning for Firefly and What Happy Mutants Know
Took us Riding With Angels, then said The Sky Leans
Recalled some younger days with Surf City Fourteens
We were right there, too, Shopping For Decorations
Smiling as you faced your Strawberry Temptation
We were filled with sympathy for Crow On The Pier
And at The Rat’s Escape, could not resist a cheer

From poignant Losing Data and the Puppet’s Plea
Across Lanes to twining Toes - From A Man Who Reads
Smiles linger from When I Was A Pretty Young Girl
Until we remember There’s A Hole In The World
We grin appreciation for the Volleydance
Our souls are Adorned with exquisite Resonance
We’re bathed in the Ocean mist of Seaside Turning
Then Someone Else’s Fire leaves us with tears burning

A treasure like The Quilt, sorrow of Losing Doug
Makes me want to give applause - and perhaps a hug.
With your words comes the breeze of Santa Ana Wind
The sting of sweat from Stacking Bales seeps through your pen
Wishing On Andromeda, I won’t pick a star
But I will tell you, my friend - that is what you are!
As you’re Reading By Street Light, just remember this
If you want a poet - your mirror’s Where One Is.

I hope A Cat Named Longing never leaves your door
For your work always gives Everything I Came For
Sometimes I Feel tears Fall, but then I hear Starsing
You pen makes magic from Just Ordinary Things
Day and Hour you always give such fine poetry
Sharing Pockets of life with your PIP Family
With Pencilled Thanks I Welcome all words that you share
Each chance I get to read you, know I Will Be There.

May your birthday be a wonderful one, my friend... you definitely deserve the best! *S*

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Yeow, I knew I got up in the middle of the night for SOMETHING..... and it was this! You move me, suthern lady...yes, you really do. Sometimes I think it's not worth doing what I do, and sometimes I think it's very very worth doing.

I don't write because mystic inner forces drive me to it, I write because I love...love the act of writing, love toying with words and ideas, love making something that didn't exist before, love life and at least some of the people in it....this incredible poem of yours reminds me of that, takes me back to openers.

Heart thanks to you, Laura. I truly needed to see this poem at just this moment. It's been a week of weeks for me capping a year unlike any other, very good in some ways, very hard in others....this makes it complete, in spades.

Thank you all so very much for joining me in wishing Ed a wonderful birthday! *S* I can't put into words how magnificent I consider his talents... I can only arrange some of his titles as reminder of his contributions... and hope he understands how much I admire and respect the man and how deeply I value his friendship. *S*

Ed, I can't think of a greater reason to write than love... and can't think of better results than you achieve. *S* If ever I should envy an inanimate object, I would envy your pen... and I can't wait for the day I find all these titles and more gracing the shelves of my local bookstore! *S*

I truly hope your day and life are filled with joy... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Gear Miss Suthern

This is a wonderful gift you have bestowed to a wonderful poet. How thoughtful and how warming this must be to know your poetry is so much appreciated that someone would incorporate the titles into a poem such as this

Happy Birthday Ed

Suthern,
Thanks to your magnificient tribute to a great poet.  I, too, can't wait to see his poems published in book form. It'd be great to actually meet him at a book signing.  Ratleader has incredible versatility and skill and appetite for new insights.

I send my birthday wished along...  Happy birthday,RatLeader.   We are soooo fortunate to be able to read and respond to you live.
