"Furry, little caterpillar,
Inching down the walk,
I wish that you would stop a while,
So we could have a talk."

"Your perspective on the world,
Must differ from that of mine,
My eyes don't see, below my knees,
But yours see every line."

"Please tell me, my little friend,
What is it like down there?"
Quizzically, it looked up at me,
~ "Do you REALLY, really care?"

"Of course I do!" I ventured,
"I love creatures great and small,
And although you're cute and tiny,
You're the wisest of them all!"

It held its head up proudly,
One half inch above the ground,
And began a little story,
Making sure no one's around.

It looked at me intently,
Made me promise not to tell.
Each whispered word, was so absurd,
Then it cast a magic spell.

My head spun 'round in circles,
My eyes saw nary a thing.
I awoke next day, in a field of hay,
And on my finger, was a ring.

I tried and tried to remember,
The story that I was told,
But nothing at all, could I recall,
Of the fairy tales of gold.

The sun of morn shone brightly,
It glinted off tired hand.
It dawned on me, what I did see,
Was a shining, golden band!

I could not find the wise one,
No caterpillar did I see.
I scratched my head, and then I said,
"Now what just happened to me?"

When I got home, I climbed in bed,
Where I soon fell fast asleep.
In golden hall, in kingdom small,
I saw coins in castle keep.

Where was this land of plenty,
Where the gold touch blue of sky?
I set to task, for I had to ask,
"Where? How? Who? What? Why?"

As I ventured down the sidewalk,
The caterpillar crossed my path.
Words pillaged me, with alacrity,
And I felt the sting of wrath.

I simply could not fathom,
Why it displayed such ire to me,
I had not done, one thing wrong,
~ As far as I could see!

While speaking to me sharply,
It's voice did squeak and quiver.
With body shaking and quaking,
I soon began to shiver.

"You have the ring of magic,
Just turn it on your finger.
Your questions will be answered,
Be on your way! Don't linger!"

I said "Goodbye", and near did cry,
Because it seemed so mean,
But as I turned the ring, my heart did sing,
For there appeared a fairy queen.

She trilled to me, "You set me free,
From a spell spun long ago.
The ring of gold, from days of old,
Was the key to let me go."

She thanked me fair, then did declare,
"You released me from this evil.
The crone is gone, where there is no sun,
~The lowly, little weevil!

The fairy flit and fluttered,
And trilled her thanks to me.
"For what you've done, there's a tidy sum,
Of gold in yonder lea."

I traipsed through sunlit meadow,
Looking for my dream,
I found chest of gold, from days of old,
All aglow in sunshine's gleam.

"Furry little caterpillar,
Inching down the walk,
I wish that you would stop awhile,
So we could have a talk."

This is a very good poem Linda..it is like a childs book..it could be made into a childs book....with a slight change to the bigger words..so that they could learn to read...with big bold pictures of the creatures etc...AND also learn about poetry too at the same time.....thank you for this...

Earth Angel
I know that caterpillar, he is really an ice worm. Met him up in Alaska many years ago. And what he gave me was a shinny copper penny. And I'm not saying what I did with it.

(smiles) Awwwwwww, this made me cry in joy because I believe imagination is what brings joy and color to everyone's heart and I believe the greatest miracle is when someone may be older but never grows up, yay! (kiss on cheek) I love caterpillars, yay, now to go find the children's version, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Linda, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
