state of confusion

The priest asked his congregation to describe Jesus’ face.
I had never consciously considered this, other than statues
and Hollywood Jesus with blue eyes, or Stations of the Cross
as seen by the frightened eyes of a third-grade girl
in a maroon shift and scuffed saddle shoes.

It’s a good question, though.
The woman sitting next to me might be Jesus.
If so, she must not care for today’s sermon,
she’s been rummaging through her purse for the last five minutes.
She pulls out a cell phone, a throat lozenge, a tissue,
and a wallet-sized self-portrait.

My Father used to believe in the Virgin Mary;
said she came to him in visions. I saw Dad after he died,
in a cinder cloud over the ocean. He was melancholy mist.

After church, we stand in line at Starbucks. I stare at my cup
and wonder if the green lady logo could be Mary.

You are just so awesome.

Funny, I was telling a friend how good your work really is too.

I could turn this poem
upside down
and it would still make sense...

you do have a gift...
and I am glad you share.

Corinne~

'He was melancholy mist.'

In all that you write there is always something that grabs my heart and won't let go~
This is that something~

I think it rises to the top of the list of my favorites of yours~

Good to see you, poetess friend~

You have such interesting directions sweet poet.

I asked my daughter this same question when she told me a friend of hers looked like Jesus..

Her response?  "He looks like the traditional pictures we have that are supposedly Jesus."

Okay, she gets it.

Wonderfully written.

Serene one, you are too kind, thank you! Made my day with your reply.

Thanks Effigy!

Sunshine, I love that idea, of turning a poem upside down to see if it still works. I think I'll do that from now on as a test! If I get back to KC every now and then, is where you live far from there? Would be great fun to write a piece together, or go to a poetry reading.

Hi Ed! Thank you! I always look for your poetry -- so reflective and introspective!

Marge, you sweet lady, thank you! A lot of serious stuff surrounding me has me thinkin', you know? But as always, there has to be a bit of humor there, somewhere, otherwise we'd all go mad!

Thanks Aenimal -- haven't seen you in a while, will have to go seek out your poems!

Thanks Azblond!

Park, Park! Where have you been, boy? email me (I sent you a message).

Thank you Iliana!

Thank you kindly, Maree!

Susan, thank you! This really did happen, sitting in church last Sunday. I think we all tend to "see" Jesus the way we've been programmed to, so it was interesting to drop that perspective and see Him in everything.

Corinne...I'm in the middle of the state on I-70.  But if you come to KC...we could try to meet half-way in the middle, or even Lawrence...where I'm sure a poetry reading is always taking place.

And if one isn't...just bring yours and I'll bring mind and we'll sit in the park and read to each other!  What a treat that would be for me!
