1
Stream brambles and white stones jut,
Cold sky frame sparse red leaves
A new path never known wet
Dew skies on green dampened clothes.

2
Near a stream of brambles
Where over jutting white stones scrambles,
He breaks a new path so bold
A chill sky frames the red leaf tree top
The green dew covered won't him stop,
As he in thought feels neither wet or cold.

These are two versions of a poem of the same name by Wang Wei
Where the first is a closer word to word translation
I believe the second is what he was attempting to portray

Professor,
Thank you for enlightening us to the poetry of Wang Wei.  I enjoyed both the word to word translation and your interpretation of what he attempted to portray. The images are so pure.  Thanks for expanding the poetic horizon. ~~sadie~~

Thanks teach...I enjoyed both versions...the first took me into a cold running mountain stream...the second brought my eyes to the white rock...a climb I too will take.
