He played a hero in a paper crown
and striped pyjama bottoms.
An old library bag slung
carelessly across his chest
to carry the countless bounties
of costume jewlery and hairpins
~the glittery kind that twinkled~
to pay off the dragon teddy
that held me to ransom.

I was his maiden fair
In terry towel dressing gown
and holiday garland
adorning my worried brow.

"Save me prince of pirates,
King of fairies, superhero superstar"
I would feign in cry,
And bounding he came
to slay the menance of
plastic soldiers
and dolls whose heads
went missing in previous battles.

And in pretend he untied my hands
and placed a kiss on my cheek
to break the spell
the witches surely had cast
because thats the way
all good fairy tales are told.

Though i knew my little prince
prefered kissing frogs to girls,
he never grimaced when adorning me
with his love and toothless smiles.

And like all the "happily ever afters" go
He promised me that when he grew up
he'd marry me...
thats if daddy says it's okay.
Some days i pray for Peter Pan
to take him off to Neverland
so his little soul wont age a day.

~But I know my hero can't save me from time~

So every second he grows
will be mine to keep
secretly hiding in hankerchiefs.

Your last stanza:
“So every second he grows
will be mine to keep
secretly hiding in hankerchiefs.”

Yep, this is certainly a WOW!

Muted, I adored this wonderful poem -- I have a son, too, and know these feelings so well.  Mine is grown/growing too fast, the little boy is nearly gone.

Precious moments that we never forget. One I have, after all these years, are his first steps and his twinkling blue eyes smiling in laughter.
