Lapping up
the laudanum
another day
of normalcy

today...today
there was no pain
today the train
ran just on time.

Here I am
alone again
whittle down the track
no end
counting wood--
surrendered slats
curving past a beckoning
of trees that dare to green -
again--
Or just another ticking taunt?

Perhaps, perhaps,
again I pray.
A shrug - as I say
anyway....

Flat-head shoveling the coal

dust
as if prepared black-face
tears and blood
(or is that sweat?)
It's all the same
in dark regret
gathering the steam,
I build...

"I think I can--
I think I am
learning
to lean into curves

Patterns
in the puffs
of smoke
reveal the bones of all of me
so I stub my cigarette
and beg a show of ticketry,
pulling on the whistle-stop
as I punch the holes in card...

"Have a pleasant stay," I say.
"Remember us, for your next trip."

As if you ever had a choice.

Thanks all...I appreciate ya'll taking the time to read this'n.

I'm not that happy with it--it's kind of emotionally distant and rather contrived for my taste--but thanks for the encouragement while I go through the writer's block thang.
