like crow
found the glitter of anodized washer
sitting atop the sea of black asphalt
too much to resist

In bend to pick it up
I noticed hems of my pants worn
beginning to fray from washing
showing need to be replaced

and would have called
a raucous cry
of never more had there been
some reason for another to hear
and thought me not the strange bird
black of heart but featherless to fly

and instead
rolled the shiny metal ring
around on finger tips
wondering again at reflected light
from corners of eye
thinking not all indeed is worthless
even if not gold

Nearby robin eyed me warily
  his clothes in fine repair
    and I turned my back
but not before I swear I heard him laugh
Unruffled
I dropped the washer in my pocket
And turned my gaze to the spread of oily dark
Wondering if he who lost it
  Also saved bits he found
Or if he ignored the gleam of sun
And the sweep of frayed cuffs
Atop well worn shoes.

I, too, have been known to pick up things on the road. (We can talk about that later though.)

Thanks you, for making my day.

Ron

Wonderful!  There is always something, wheather on the ground or in the air....it is part of the care we should take of our eyes....called "to see".  Loved this poem!

The sound of silence calls,
I hear your voice and suddenly
I'm falling, lost in a dream
The echo of our souls meet
