Police in Hot Pursuit of IRS

This year we beat the deadline clock
With four hours before close of postal drop.
However, sticking with tradition, in van we four flocked
To watch others in their 11:50 hop
While we savored ice cream from nearby shop.

From 11:50-11:55, we counted 21 vehicles non-stop
Whose drivers, while continuing to drive, made their drops.
Outside three workers  scurried to collect and stamp
While citizens did steering wheel fingerdance
waiting for light to change.

At 11:56 things started to swing,
A truck with a stock trailer piled in.
Poor farmer, we knew profits have been bad,
But to pay his taxes with all the cattle he had!

Six more souls made it  before strike of  twelve,
One in panic in the middle of street.
She wore an “Oops” while she scavenged front seat;
With three minutes to go bundle complete.

At 12:00, the workers carried in table and boxes,
And just were about to close the door and stop
As a police car pulled in the parkin' lot.
(We reasoned it must be a measure of security
when angered people miss the clock)

A long legged policeman charged out of his car
Running  quickly in pursuit!
Was he carrying a gun?
In his hand flapping in his wind
Were taxes unsealed, undone!

Waiting until the police officer left
they accommodated thirteen more cars
Of delinquent procrastinators.
So, to the policeman in pursuit of IRS,
Those tardy people might thank
their lucky stars.
