Sonnet for Michael Auguste, in response to a painting of his.

I scarcely know the man---but I have seen
  The colours of the ocean lined with fire;
The torrents, and the water of the pyre
Undermining dizzy sailors---blue and green,
I have seen the surface twist in icy sheen
  As single helmsmen onward press'd---aspired
To challenge walls of water, twisting higher
Than any artifact---and yet the scene
Could so enchant the sensitivity
Of one who, walking idly on the shore
Brought forth his hand and shaped into his vision
The helmsman's plight---aligned so beautifully
That, in sweet silence, we could see the roar
The ocean makes, and feel it to precision.

What a wonderful tribute to someone who has had to deal with so much. I've never seen the painting you speak of save for the vision you so lovingly painted in your words

So beautiful, Michael will adore it.

May I say that was not only an exceptional poem, but an outstanding gesture on your part Brian.  I hope you will not mind if I put Michael's painting of the ship here for viewing?

Bri, can I hug you for this write?
It's a beautiful piece, so true to the feeling of Michael's art, and proof of the depth of your poetic compassionate heart.

And Sharon? thanks for posting this here, I've loved that painting of Michael's since the first time I saw it.

Brian, what an incredibly beautiful tribute. This sonnet flows wonderfully, and captures the flavour of both the sea ... and the artist himself.

Michael is a brilliant artist, and your poem has touched me in such a warm and heartfelt way. Within the depth and beauty of this piece, you have portrayed the perspective of an admirer of his work not only on canvas, but of the man behind the brush as well.

Beautifully written, Brian ... you are a master of the sonnet, and your tribute is to someone I hold dear as well.  Very much enjoyed.

Best wishes and hugs to both you gentlemen,
/Kit

Well, here I sit at my computer in a state of awe at the exquisite beauty of both your poem and Michael's painting...

This show of appreciation for Michael's phenomenal talent, must surely be a much-needed tonic for him at this very difficult time in his life. God bless you both!

P.S. Thanks to Mysteria for posting Michael's painting in her reply! She is so  kind and thoughtful.

Dropping in sending well wishes to Michael.
Love the ship picture also. When the Tall Ships came here to Ohio I went down to see them and made a poem called The Tall Ships and had it printed in the newspaper.
Sending out hugs from Ohio.
