The Spring rains came not
So farmer Cain only planted a garden plot
From the river he did pay
The children of the town
Fetching water for three cents a day
To moisten his parched ground.
The main fields lay fallow
With no rain clouds to cast a shadow
He wasted not the seed,
But the poorer farmers had to try
For far greater was their need
Yet all the fields remained over dry.
Ruined farms and desperate men
One by one came to beg of him
He was known as a compassionate man
Yet he was left with little seed
And too many there with an open hand,
Cain could not all of them feed.
So his gold bought their earth
Paying a fair price for what it was worth
And they left to go to the city
Where they fished the river wide and flowing
Hoping there to find some pity
Yet not sure of to what life they were going.
Summer remained arid still
The blue skies not a cloud did fill
The peasants had no water,
Yet they could not there remain,
One tried to sell his young daughter
And all that was left was Cain.
“She will not make the journey
to the far off and struggling city”
The daughter was a young teen,
“It would best for her to warm your bed,
a kind man and not city mean”
The distraught mother with tears said.
So they left her and the land parched
Standing at the fence Cain just watched
For two gold coins bought a slave
Keeping her from the brothel or grave.

Wondered where these went and found them too far down already.  Great read!
