1

Desire can drive a man insane
Making mush out of his brain,
Longing for the surface beauty
Thought enthralled by a cutie;
So it was with the young Cain.
Emerald was his affections aim
Raven hair and eyes deep green,
Prettiest woman he had ever seen;
Not that Cain had seen that many
This being his first visit to the city
From the country on a mountainside.
Yet her beauty could not be denied,
With a glance he was in her powers
Spending his money on exotic flowers
She took every gift that he sent
Till every last penny was spent
Then casting him off well used
His soul and spirit now abused.
Going back to the country on a slow train
And Emerald did not remember his name.

2

There was much time,
As he road the slow moving train,
For his clouded mind
To sober from the once insane
And at the end of the line
He exited to his mountainous terrain
Walking penniless home
Just poor sad farmer Cain
To still live life alone.
The gate was still open
Waiting for him to return in
To gather his shovel and hoe
And return to the terraced land
For he had no where else to go
He was just a farming man.
The days stretched from spring to autumn
Sunrise to sunset he would toil
The work gave bounty to him
For small but rich was his soil
And returned many bits of gold
In exchange for the crops he sold,
But he needed them not
And they felt unsure in his hand
Since he had not yet forgot
His folly away from the land,
And passed the gold to the poor
Who in winter would need it more.
Another and another year he stayed,
Repairing terrace walls and such,
Daily sweat his farm was made
Having little and having so much
There in his farm all alone,
His life, his being, his home.

3

All his foolish youth and pride,
And sense of adventure had died,
He had become just farmer Cain
And everyone knew him by name
For his actions and simplicity
Since returning from the far off city.
With a lonely home he prospered
And generosity he fostered
Giving the peoples kitchens grain,
Although anonymously given
All knew it was from farmer Cain
The source could not be hidden.
Winters came and summers went
Some soft and others far too cruel,
Coin never on his comforts were spent,
And some said he was the great fool
For living so simply when he had gold,
For giving so freely to ungrateful poor
For living on so large and productive hold.
Cain paid them no attention
Those jealous of his situation
For the needy were grateful in their way
And the enjoyment was in the giving
That he could comfort their harshest day
So the hungry could continue living.

Thoroughly enjoyed Prefessor

Maree.

Beauty of the world which is soon to perish has two edges, one of laughter and one of anguish, cutting the heart asunder.

Cain indeed was a very rich man! ~ and one for whom I felt a tremendous amount of compassion ~ and respect.

You are quite the raconteur, Professor!

I read each of these as you posted them...and each became more hypnotic...
All together, a real masterpiece.
Nicely done.
