All his foolish youth and pride, And sense of adventure had died, He had become just farmer Cain And everyone knew him by name For his actions and simplicity Since returning from the far off city. With a lonely home he prospered And generosity he fostered Giving the peoples kitchens grain, Although anonymously given All knew it was from farmer Cain The source could not be hidden. Winters came and summers went Some soft and others far too cruel, Coin never on his comforts were spent, And some said he was the great fool For living so simply when he had gold, For giving so freely to ungrateful poor For living on so large and productive hold. Cain paid them no attention Those jealous of his situation For the needy were grateful in their way And the enjoyment was in the giving That he could comfort their harshest day So the hungry could continue living. I read this very early this morning, Professor... and I knew I needed to come back to it again... it has many layers.... and I feel a need to be warm. |
