listening to songs today
that make the heart go mellow
light and dark are just two shades
that bleach life back to shallow

writing such stuffy lines
of shabby melodies
marked by odd outer rhymes
and weird inner times
when all I need to know
is how you are doing
in your present days
and if you readily admit
the past was all
a big mistake

but as long as I can write
all such nonsensical trite
should I truly need to know
if your times go fast or slow

hurt sits inside of me
like a sinful inner child
begging forgiveness
and small-time mercies
like short-second glimpses
of the face in your eyes
and hints of a smile
are fast-fading like
times gone by

sometimes I guess I just need
you to know that I still care
sometimes I guess I just need
to know if you had once cared

before bleaching
the yellow
of my day
