From the mountain high nearby
where eagles nest and daily fly
I heard this clarion call from the very best,
from the highest branch of a tall spruce tree,
the strongest voice did screech at me
more emphatically than all the rest:

“Sound the alarm! Sound the alarm!
Be aware of potential harm!
But don’t run and hide when you see me
careening off the craggy cliffs, above thee
from the top of a mighty windswept spruce tree.
Be aware, but not full of fear,
just listen carefully and you shall hear
the voice of freedom being released freely
to spread across the land between two seas,
to be carried upon the wings of brother eagle
who does see from a different vantage point
that when free speech is threatened,
the voice of humanity may someday be
merely a distant memory
of an extinct species.
But the threat is not from without
as much as from within the heartlands,
from the bowels of the country,
the howls heard from prairies and grandstands
that lie from sea-to-once-shining-sea.

Please listen to me,
for I am the voice,
the symbol of  Freedom.

Don’t be afraid, but don’t sit silently,
and do not close your eyes to reality.
Take to the skies and realize it’s time to scream,
it’s time to oppose those who would stifle the dream
that all must be free to enjoy the inalienable rights.
It’s your moral responsibility to challenge your leaders
when you genuinely believe their actions are unwise.
Freedom’s voice will be silenced otherwise.”

When I heard these alarm cries of the mighty eagle,
I sang out loudly, and heard the echos that rang
in the canyons;
and the message did roar repeatedly,
a cacophony of crashing warnings in waves of words,
over the farms and cities that lie shore–to-shore.

Is anyone listening?

Excellent write.

I have wondered where we will be when the McCain-Feingold 60 day suspesion of the First Amendment begins this year.

Will any one notice?  How do we hear the sound of silenced voices?  Where do we go from here when one candidate is ample proof that America hires the handicapped and the other candidate has proven himself over 20 years to be the best politician money can buy?

"They say that ignorance is bliss,
reflecting,
I thought of this:
There seems to be
an awful lot
of happy people here."

Karilea, thank you so much for that generous reply.

And icebox, thank you!  I did get a chuckle from your reply, though it's really a sad laugh, considering the seriousness of this situation. And I sincerely hope you never succumb to the sounds of silence.

THANKS, Martie, and I hear your voice in the freedom choir!

I hear you, Kacy.  This reminds me of the time I heard the birds talking (one of the earlier Weobaei poems called "Listen" in Open Poetry #30) -- they were warning!  Glad I'm not the only one who listens to birds.   ....jo

from one shore to another, heard every word!

          hold your wisdom close,
