in the shadows

In the Summer of ‘68
it seemed my life was woven
out of motion;
at times
I crossed the oceans too easily
as if they were the savage streets
where I grew old before my years.
I had no notions of mortality,
except perhaps the certainty
that I knew how to make it cling
to others.
I traveled harm's way
without a sane man's fears.
In a time when we were really free,
it was egoistic tools
like me
who built the stage
on which we now watch our freedoms
fade away.
It didn't matter
if it was a war zone,
or a friendly local
government sponsored riot,
you could swear you saw me
anywhere,
I'd deny it knowing
if you insisted
one of us was going to disappear.
I would have bet,
back then,
I could have shown Claude Rains' Jack
a trick or two;
my life was not so much made of chaos
as it sounds,
I simply justified the madness of the times
on grounds that when there is no proof,
there is no trial,
there is no need for a defense.

icebox

The summer of 68 I was heavy with my first son and my world revolved around his growing.  It is hard to imagine the one you lived in.
