Last week, a milder trumpet sound
Was heard in wind, had purged the ice
From earth, and warmed the church
That is her breast;
*
Heralding angels, feather dressed
Out of the heavens, ascending
From service, in diocese fields
Of southern America,
*
to scout the northern hedgerow lines
(Because it seemed the time)
To build new rectories,
And for my sight, a place to worship.
*
But cold that left, returned
And winter, so it seems, for shows
On boughs of evergreens,
Bishops dressed in blue and rust,
Perched on fallen snow.

let me stand 'neath the rows
were the wildest flower grows
by touch of spring, and e-ven'ing
and sow the sigh a bluebird brings...
