A Poet's Fantasy

There is a weakness that
pulls me into its hold
drags me under, where breathing
becomes labored and the worlds indifference
clouds my thoughts
until all that can emerge is
a wasteland of words, unseasoned
and un-self-forgiving.

I listen to the hum of the fan
that processes the inside of me,
knowing that every little movement
chances the pain to resurface,
in otherwise silence that etches its virtue
upon my skin, cold and untouchable
from the leftover traces of you.

I empty the ashes daily, rekindling
the fires until today, when preference
becomes the surrounding cold,
the fever of memories alone, enough
to sustain what little bodily warmth is needed,
with another storm brewing.

To warp the time and sleep forever
behind these locked doors that keep out
all that could be... A poet's world of fantasy
when once my only wish...
the hand of friendship.
