Sharpening

Birds dance in pairs along the yardwall
like words, couplets sooner for the dancing.

Do I hold this penknife like a fool’s sword
thinking to slice the melon of infinity,

Or have I honed its edge so sharp
merely to whittle at a yellow painted stick?

A pencil of tree sound marks my tableau.
Every tree writes sound, an age-long line of it.

These sycamore eggs warming on the ground
say more of me than anything I might compose.

A gardener would have swept them up,
but I have no gardener, nor any garden.

Still the tree writes for me, eggs will hatch
into trees or birds, and dance a while.

Will you dance with me along the yardwall?
Shall we then drop, singing, into the grass?

Ed, a real big  W O W  to this one -- I really, really liked it.  It has a feel of the eternal about it, somehow.           ......jo

This is absolutely magnificent, my friend. *S* The closing lines epitomize beauty... the entire poem is one to enjoy again and again.  That sharp edge whittled words with perfection. *S*
