What Ever Happened To Forever

The space beside me in bed
has been empty too long,
the sheets have grown cold,
even the smell of you is gone.
All that lingers is knowing
that once upon a time,
you heated it with passion,
warmed it long through the night,
swore it would never be empty,
as long as you breathed.

I saw you this evening,
your breath misting in the cold air;
you breathed,
yet the space beside me is empty,
has been far too long,
the sheets have grown cold,
the smell of you is gone,
and I breathe. . .
deeply inhaling,
tasting only emptiness,
and cold.

Where once you warmed the air
broken promises linger, and I wonder,
what ever happened to forever,
to death do us part,
holy matrimony,
to you . . . and me.

The space beside me in bed is empty,
the sheets are cold,
the smell of you is gone . . .

I lay here, eyes closed, reaching out,
touching what isn’t there,
feeling what’s gone,
caressing memories I can’t,
don’t want too,
pray I never . . . forget.

The space beside me is empty,
has been . . . for far . . .
too long.

Well done Jimmy!
Very much enjoyed this touch of melancholy,
you paint it with such a gentle ache m'friend.
Hugs~

Sometimes it's hard to let go... and harder to understand why. The longing and heartache come through quite clearly.

I think I'll just sleep on the couch tonight
and hug my pillow.

Such a sad sigh you have written here James~

Nicely done, nevertheless~

Nice writing...in my case, I told the judge that I didn't want a divorce, and then the judge told me that it took two people that wanted the marriaage to have a marriage, so forever effectively ended with that pronouncment...James

Thanks all, and James M. , isn't it funny that it takes two to agree to marriage but not to reverse it...maybe if both had to agree to divorce, as many as do would not make the leap and work harder to keep it.

Jim,
When you put your heart to poem, the vastness and the richness are striking.

Very, very touching piece Jimmy. Chris

I hear the sound of a heart breaking in this one.Silent tears crashing upon the reef of life.
Sad but well done.
