Have Interview, Will Travel

With pallor, I stared
at the starlight
above me;

My reflection
rippled
in the lampshade
of the floodlight
beside the adobe.

The clip-clop
of retreating hoofbeats
drummed their way
into my consciousness,

Collected thoughts
gathered the morning’s
events.

The lesson:
entering as a clown
upon a donkey
was not the best impression,
but an impression
nonetheless.

As the starlight faded
into the lump
on the back of my head,
I knew
without doubt,
the job
would not be mine;

That was as clear
as the day
before me.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
