Rome - The Coliseum

In this ponderous lump of rock I see,
What Caesar saw, and Shelley's stave set free,
The might and sway the great Empire had,
In the days of yore ere I was a lad.
Here, Caesar's friends cooled in the marble shade,
While beneath...the wolf and eagle once played.

The columns have long crumbled into dust,
Shattered like shards of broken rhyme by rust,
Ashes sift through the streets of yesteryear,
Yet stir not forgiveness in this celestial sphere.
Here spectral crowds once cheered-armed aggressors,
Now only remembered by professors.

The Coliseum's tale wafts in the wind,
An arrogant yarn that time can't rescind,
It writes on the ruins of silent rhyme,
How these once proud hearted columns of stones,
The great Empire's arthritic, blanched bones,
E'en they...are crushed...by Imperious Time.

Remember, if you're not part of the future, you're history!

enjoyed...especially the lines:

"How these once proud hearted columns of stones,
The great Empire's arthritic, blanched bones,
E'en they...are crushed...by Imperious Time."

descriptive personification...well done

Appreciated your very well written reflections. Time turns everything into dust, yes!
In those ruins our thoughts go back in time to all the suffering that took place there. Now, sometimes, the Coliseum is used for very magical concerts and who knows .... they might have a "healing effect" on the ghosts of the past.
Love, Margherita

EV,
I just had to stop here for a bit of history, knowing you'd make it my worth while.   I really like your deep thinking and the way you presented this.   (I'm researching the 1913 flood right now in hopes to catch a little history, too, but I imagine that it will not be easy for me to do. Wish me luck!  Your poem was so smooth that you made telling history so easy--I know it's not!  I'm envious!)
