Mr. Rogers, Where Are You?

Do you still remember when
a dime was nothing small?
Now you need another quarter,
just to make a call

We didn’t all have cell phones,
when we played out in the street
We just came home when we were told,
then everyone would eat

I remember Go Go rings,
and how they made you cool
I remember carrying my lunch,
box to my school

At the cafeteria
the only choice was milk
We used to all wear cotton,
now it’s leather pants and silk

I still remember Jiffy Pop
Hot Popcorn in a pouch!
I still remember Cookie Monster
and Oscar the Grouch

I still remember Sghettio’s,
just open up a can
I still remember yakking!
every time we ate some Spam

I remember Kool-Aid
used to be my favorite drink
Just add a pound of sugar,
and some water from the sink

Now it’s soda at the school,
and bags of chips for lunch
What happened to the sandwiches,
or apples that went crunch

I never will forget the day,
the Beatles all broke up
Or the first time Elvis uttered,
“Thank you very much”

What happened to the Happy Days,
and JJ, on Good Times
Now it’s east coast west coast
hipsters, breaking out their nines

Now Limbaugh is a hypocrite,
who’s obviously on drugs
And Pepsi hires Britney,
cause they both have plastic jugs

Barry Bonds, on steroids!
Will his records still be good?
What happened to the days,
of Mr. Rogers neighborhood?

I still remember Opie whistling,
carrying all those fish
And, I Dream Of Genie,
how she blinked to make a wish

The world has gotten smaller
but our enemies have not
What happened Jimmy Carter,
with Menachem and Sadat?

I never will forget the day
we landed on the moon
Or the day that I saw Gary Cooper
in High Noon

The Pres wants us to send another,
Mars mission aloft
Gates should try Viagra,
cause his micro is too soft!

I still remember all the Good Times
and, the Happy Days
What ever happened to the values
of the good old ways?

What happened to just doing
all the things you knew you should
What happened to the days,
of Mr. Rogers neighborhood?

I wish that time could just stand still
so everyone could breathe
What happened to that great big dream,
that everyone believed?

I hope that we are all asleep,
and one day we’ll wake up
Who knows they even might invent,
some noodles, in a cup?

Okay... now I'm done whining for a while...

I've oft wondered what happened to those really big scoops on top of the ice cream cones...you know the ones, that went all the way down to the bottom of the cone...good to the last drop...yummmy

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

I do believe Mr. Rogers is smiling on you...that's what I think!

What do you say, Richy...we go on strike, and bring people back to their senses?

GG ~ Alyssa, your comment really made me laugh... I’m glad you liked that part, I guess it did have a small hint of humor to it didn’t it...     Thank You Alyssa

Lee ~ So nice of you to stop by Lee! Yes, the BIG scoops of ice cream, huh? Do you have a Baskin Robbins in your area? It’s an ice cream shop. We have one in our town, with a drive thru window... isn’t that strange.. lol  Right next to the drive thru Donut shop... it’s a cool town, you never even have to get out of your car lol

Susan ~ How nice to hear from you Susan! Yeah you’re much too young to remember Go Go Rings. They were just these big ol fatty colored plastic rings that all the kids just had to have. You know, it was back in the day, of bell bottoms, and Beatle Boots with taps, Spock sideburns, Bruce Lee, and oh yeah... I almost forgot, Hi-Karate after shave... boy you’d better know some martial arts, if you were going to wear that smelly stuff... lol I don’t know, maybe these Go Go rings were just a local thing. Maybe someone else here at pippy will remember?  Thanks Susan!

Sunshine ~ Hi Karilea, how have you been? I hope all is well. Thank you for the nice comment on Mr. Rogers... But then I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the kind of guy, who smiled in his sleep
Go on strike huh? Sure, why not... it sounds like a very worthy cause... Thanks Karilea

Rex ~ LOL Rex... that was one funny reply Rex! I’m really glad you liked it... lol Thanks a bunch for stopping by!

Seymour ~ Thanks Sy... the last time I took a fast trip down memory lane, I got pulled over by a cop. I asked him if I was driving too fast... and he said, no, your flying too low...
Thanks so much Sy!

Thanks Everyone!

The last 2 lines of that stanza caught me off guard...lost my place I was laughing so hard LOL

but in all fairness, those were also the days when your best friend got polio just months before the Salk wonder drug, or your Grandmother passed away at 52, because technology couldn't prolong her days because their was no early detection technology, and everyone smoked cigarettes and no one had ever heard of the surgeon general, much less his warnings...oh, well....I have ranted morbidly on a great nostaligic write..."plastic jugs"...now that was worth the price of admission... smiles

Dear Richy, even though most of the things you mention are unknown to me, there are a few that match also for Europe ....  And of course I also watched Happy Days!

We look back sometimes with nostalgia and it's worth the trip when the result is some fun. Your poem did surely achieve this goal.

Love, Margherita

Richy, You are making some of us feel so old.
But aren't the memories great? Jiffy Pop...how many of those pouches did I burn in my lifetime (not to mention almost catching the kitchen on fire.) Speaking of "I
Dream of Jeannie"...remember the big uproar about the exposed bellybutton? Oh heavens!!
Let me see....candy lipstick...wax lips and fingertips (yuck..that we actually chewed!!)... remember tieing rubber bands together to play the jumping game...double dutch and SPUD? "The Flintstones" was a primetime show..."My Three Sons", "The Real McCoys", "Mr. Ed", "My Favorite Martian" did not seem hokey. "Wonderful World of Disney" was in color even if it was just a green ring around everyone's face. You could sing the words to all the themes of the TV shows...and hummed them too the next day at school or work... We actually had live bands at school dances with brass that really rocked.....oh the good old days!!!!!
Thanks for the memories, my friend.

PS. Thank you for your very supportive words
concerning my weight loss. All the Rah Rahs I can get help so much.

Hope ~Anytime Hope, I’m glad you could come along!

Dingusjr ~ Hey Dingusjr, how nice to hear from you! Yeah, isn’t that terrible about the guy...   Thanks so much for stopping by!

Steaven ~ That’s so true Steaven about all the advances that come with each new generation. Those, no one would knock. I just sometimes yearn for the days, when life was a little simpler, and kinder, and of course, a whole lot safer. At lest it sure seemed that way, to me. I’m sure someday, people will look back at this time we’re living in right now, and think, Man, those days stunk, they still had incurable diseases, they still used fossil fuels, and they didn’t even have cyborgs yet... lol

Dixie ~ Ahhh Dixie I know... and I’m under medication for it too you know... lol Seriously, Dixie, Thank You

Martie ~ Oh no problem Martie, I always open doors for nice young ladies

Grover ~ Ahhh yes Grover... memory... it’s the first thing to go... I can’t remember the second one...

Youngatheart ~ Yeah I know, Young One, but the ‘eck wit it! We made it this far, that should be worth something, no? Yep, burning the ol Jiffy Pop, but hey I still burn microwave popcorn. Yes, Jeanie’s belly button, and Elvis’s hips. Now it’s Janet’s _ _ _ _ oh wait, they already did show that on TV... huh, go figure? Oh gosh, the wax lips, they were funny for about 30 seconds and then you’d give them a few chews, until you realized, that you were basically chewing on a colored candle... lol ... patooey! Never did play that jumping game you mentioned, we couldn’t afford to buy a rubberband! And double dutch? Couldn’t play that either, that rope, was our dryer, out back... Yes, the Flintstones were prime time, and wasn’t the Jetson’s too? And Batman, and The Green Hornet, and Ed Sullivan was on, Sunday night? Yeah, I could go on forever... I think I just did... lol
Oh, and your welcome about the support. Ive been there, and done that myself, a few times... lol Take Care Youngatheart. It’s always fun to chat with you!

(big angel hugs) Oh Richy, I too ask the same question, sweet friend, the loss of Mr. Rogers and Captain Kangaroo has left a humongous cavity in the children's network and more and more are children are vulnerable to the loss of innocence and adulterated world! (sad sigh) Who will fill the shoes of Mr. Rogers, I pray it is one who shares his vision, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Richy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Richy...Enjoyed walking down memory lane with you.

Use to be water & air were free
Now they charge at least a fifty cent fee

All night every night on T.V was family time
When Superman and other hero's fought crime

Now Janet's on the tube
Showing off a boob.

Noah ~ Thanks Noah, yes, I got a feeling that the days of guys like Mr. Rogers, and Captain Kangaroo hosting morning children programs are over. Now, if kids even bother watching TV, its MTV, or VH1, but they’re more likely to be on the computer, or on a game system like Playstation 2. The world is just moving so fast these days. I can only imagine how it’s going to be in the future. I wonder if robotics will play a larger role in
the care of young children in the home in some circumstances. Can you imagine? Possibly feeling more affection, for a machine, then your actual parents, who are zipping back and forth to bed and breakfast weekends out in space. Okay, now people really think I’m weird... lol  Thanks Noah!

Paul ~ Hey Paul, it’s nice to meet you! Glad you could stop by. Enjoyed the little ditty you put together... Yeah Janet gives a new meaning to the term, Boob Tube... lol
Thanks for the nice comments Paul. Take Care!
