I watched a hawk fly this morning;
I'm not sure it was hunting,
maybe just practicing the arts by which it lives;
no charade
no deception
no pretense of civility,
it is the perfect culling scavenger,
keeping life within its reach flowing
cleanly in unquestioned evolutionary lines.
If I had died when I was younger
my own lifeline might be clean as well;
it's boring now,
and muddled,
and I often am not sure how I get from dawn to dusk.

Too many times
I had to wonder why I was left alive,
the cliched last man standing,
though in truth not always standing,
I looked from youth to old age
for answers in the supernatural,
since theology held no truth for me.
I suppose in more ways than most
I was free to search,
but also free to disregard
and toast the passage of the lies.

Now there is so little time
to share with those I care about
the skills that have become so rare
in this world of make believe.
Make believe we're stable,
make believe we're able to elect politicians
who don't lie,
or make believe we can afford the lifestyles
we carry debt to buy;
I don't belong in any world,
so I suppose
this is as good as any other I could choose.
How did I lose the purity
that I recognized as clarity
in the morning flight of a single predatory hawk?

Because you are deep and look for meaning in many things.  Thank you for sharing so much of yourself in poetry.  *hugs*

Icebox -- You are so wise in your questioning -- and you have seen the hawk fly and understand, and we are privelged to get to see it through your eyes.  Thank you.  .....jo

there are so many lines I could quote and claim to have an inherent understanding of...but I won't.

Icy~

Your talent knows no bounds...this was haunting.

You know of course, had you not done and learned what you have in this life, you would not be ready for the next...unless you learned and did it all in this one...

You are truly an inspiration..and I for one am always glad to read you...

I thought I was alone in this world,
A ponderer of thoughts as these;
Holding the wolf of life by the ears
Afraid to let go, knowing that release of grip allows the death-hawk swoop,
And time to lift my soul away...
It is the wolf here that you speak of,
Your spirit guide that tries your physical body,
But you are well aware of the hawks shadow on your back..
Be well, you are not alone..
I need poems like these sometimes to reincarnate the reality of what I truly am, and to clear from my mind the mud of modern thought.
This is what I see in this poem, perhaps these words are far from the meaning of what you intended, but the words have touched me in this way...

Hi, Icebox.  It only takes a little seed to grow a big tree and if a hawk should fly the skies, why not too your mind?  You speak for many people here - an insightful write as always.
