The Valentine

It’s strange how those moments of youth never fade
As you cling on to memory’s mime
Certain days and events where your character’s made
That are carved ever deeper with time

I recall in my schooldays a moment like this
When the values I’d learned came to light
Though a child of just ten, I would not step amiss
From the principles I knew were right

On a Valentine’s day, we exchanged little cards
Silly wishes to all of our friends
It was time to include everyone in the class
And for some they would help make amends

Everyone turned my way for inside of my box
Was one envelope specially sealed
And  I opened it slowly and brushed back my locks
As a secret would soon be revealed

So obviously from an admirer of mine
And everyone curious to see
Who so lovingly picked out a Hallmark so fine
For a person as timid as me

Then they burst out in laughter to find that the boy
Was the least liked among all the rest
And that moment defined what the heart would employ
To put challenge and grace to the test

Then without looking up, I just fingered the card
That had  hearts made of velvet and fuzz
As I lifted my eyes, I tried ever so hard
Not to show how embarrassed I was

I was angry at those who were laughing so hard
Unaware of his low self esteem
And I said this was truly the loveliest card
Among all of the cards I had seen

No one in the class got a card such as this
Not even from a very best friend
The shame and the ridicule known to exist
In that moment was put to an end

A simple small gesture went such a long way
For I’m certain that deep down inside
A valentine card that was scorned on that day
Is recalled by a man with great pride

Yes, Elizabeth...your grace would carry the day, and make a Valentine's memory that could never be forgotten!  Brava!

Ahhhh, aren't those the best cards, straight from the heart.

Hugs to you my friend,

Elizabeth....this is a beautiful poem, so perfectly written. I work with little children daily and their self esteem can be so fragile as other children can be so cruel...but I also know...that one small act of kindness can go a long way for some.

Rock on! That's the nicest thing anyone could do for an "unpopular" child....you probably made his day...this was so sweet.

I can certainly see you doing that, Liz, with that gigantic heart you have. Little things like that can make such a very big difference in someone's life....I have little doubt he would ever forget.

Happy Valentines day, m'lady

Elizabeth, this was beautiful and I loved reading it, a sad memory but one that has lingered and today remembered; for that the man shall be ever grateful. Thank you for sharing this today.

Sincerely
Rick

Some people learn to be loving... it's either inherent to you or learned very early. *S* This one touched me so... it's as beautiful as its author. *S*
