Me and my friends sit
here deep at the start
of the twenty-first century;
we were talking about
something that will be made
in Japan to stop the tsunamis,
some great pyramid; and the thought
crashed heavily into me, that
we stood there talking
of shapes that would or may be,
just as at the bottom of the
twentieth century people
long dead were talking about
man going to space, passenger
airplanes, cars going faster than
horses, colour television.
And before them lay, in a
pattern marked with humanity's
unique, grotesque, fallen, redeemable
signature, Events.

Why stop the tsunamis?
There is a great black
wave waiting to engulf
us all, one by one;
it came for the
black-and-white people
in 1910, it will come
for us all, me, and my dear friends.
