Moved from a shack to a barn

It happens
That a thought will occur to me about mud and porcelain
Or charcoal and diamond

And with it
The certainty that a poem is in there somewhere
That it needs only to be uncovered

On some rare occasions
It lies just under the surface

Or is sitting there glistening
At the bottom of a stream of consciousness
Wanting only to be plucked

But now
And more frequently
Thoughts of clay and statuary
Are found deeper and deeper in the strata

Like the fossil remains of some great beast
Awaiting pick and shovel to unearth them
Before they can be polished and arranged
Into some semblance of sense

So, if you need me
You can find me in the Badlands

I’ll be the perplexed looking fellow
Squatting at the rim of the excavation
From which these words were mined

Peering into the darkness for the spine
That will hold them all together

"In looking Northward, I see a light"

Muse trouble?

You ARE a muse, ye hermit.

I like the methphor... sometimes it is difficult to see the treasure far below the surface.  Keep digging.... and don't forget the little brush for when you are up close and personal.

At the risk of being accused of stating a double entendre, I love the feeling of old bones.  I live near a lignite bed which sometimes yields interesting things.  Close by there is a stream bed which frequently gives up ancient sharks' teeth and one of my favorites is the fireplace I built with black marble which is chock full of fossils, mostly trilobites and plants.  When I touch fossils, I try to imagine life in general in those alien worlds.  I can't, but it is fun to try.  Thanks for the images.

Ed.. it does indeed appear we have been on the same expedition and uncovering perhaps those things that lie a bit deeper...

enjoyed this... and a better say to the whole than my own feeble attempt...

I don't comment much anymore... found it to be a risk I didn't need to take.. but this deserves a comment.. and a nod

stay warm on the river sir..

oh man I love this write...what a superb poetic employ of theme, metaphor and imagery.

me thinks you struck gold with this one poet sir...one I wish I had wrote.

me thinks me me muse ran off with an archeologist.

excellent penning poet sir...good to see your name here today.

Well I cant say what I might believe ...
but if God made you ... he's in love with me.

I'm just envisioning you sitting perplexed at what you have uncovered...sitting and pondering for days a glimpse of some idea until finally it hits you and you get it.

Awesome poem!  Thanks for putting words to my stance as I sit and sit until I find the spine.

Hope you find many more spines, and then share them!
