On Tuesdays, following geography and maths
the child walks home
taking side streets and alleys
past his grandfather's house.

Remembering the embittered words
keeps the child at bay, but still watching
breathing out his mother's hostility
in short gasps against the fence.

At first, the child is merely an old-man voyeur
dressed in St Michael's uniform,
leaning against the old wooden fence
and peering through the half opened window;

but before long, each Tuesday afternoon
becomes ritual.
The child stands, enchanted by a
once-beloved figure,
hoping to repeat the glimpses
of his grandfather.

Waiting patiently until the house becomes
discoloured by shadows.

The silence emanating from his window
to the road, speaks the old man's solitude
in quiet tones.
Never beckoned forth, or let inside
yet the child remains; caring enough to stay
and taking the silence with him
as he goes.

The child wanders the street
pulling out the towers of grass
that border the fence
and clenching them in his hand.
Unbidden, the child's gaze
drifts back to his grandfather's house
and from inside his peeling white window
the old man belatedly
waves.

I'd really appreciate it if you guys could tell me what you think this one is about, as well. I don't know if I am clear enough.

this is such a heart-wrenching write...I was especially taken by the lines:

"The silence emanating from his window
to the road, speaks the old man's solitude
in quiet tones."

It is as sad as that lonely wave.

(big angel hugs) This is so very sad, sweet friend, no little child should ever be neglected and I pray that all children can have closeness to their loved ones and their loved ones never take their children for granted, God Bless You, my prayers are with this boy, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet friend, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

It leaves me wanting more... and that's good... you've written characters to care about. *S* Loved the ending!

This has a very somber mood to it...as
well as a mood of what once was...now but
a memory,  at least in my opinion from
the read of it.  Certainly there were lots
of emotions flowing as well as having been
influenced by the mother (in my opinion)...
