Through the Years

I probably said I love you,
that sort of thing is expected
at that sort of time.
It’s been a while
and my memory is not what it was,
but I can’t recall
ever hearing those words
in your voice.
Possibly I never did.
I remember placing my palm flat
on your warm chest,
feeling the coarse hair
above your thudding heart,
and thinking,
I will remember this
in the years that come.
