Have you ever asked?
What it’s like to be an ant?
So small and routinised,
Never anyone different.

They storm in huge packs,
An insect military,
Storming across a dirt desert,
Beneath humanity.

Have you ever asked?
How deep their tunnels go?
Winding into the earth,
Further than a burrow.

Have you ever laughed?
As you snapped one in your hand?
The little creature decimated,
For encroaching on your land.

Will you ever know?
Just how strong they are,
20000 of the buggers,
Could pick up your car.

Have you ever asked?
What it is like to be an ant?
Small and yet they live
In the shadow of a giant.

A giant who kills swiftly,
A deadly poison snow,
Chokes the life of the ant,
No life here may grow.

But have you ever feared?
An ant grown tenfold?
The beast destroying your town,
That’s what those movies told.

But the gods in their suits of white,
As they cross gene with gene,
Will this be only a story?
Once their future is seen…

I've often wondered this kind of stuff, too.  I thought it irrational, but since you wonder, too, and have thought the same questions, I guess it wasn't too irrational, after all!

Jessie, good poem.  Yes, I fear ants because here in Texas, we have the killer kind.  Small but deadly.  And, I am allergic to ant bites!  They do have a kind of power over me for sure.
