Redbirds in Snowy Pine

You shan’t see them all,
if at all,
even as a photo takes you within,

for far away
was the caretaker
of the moment,
but there are four in habit…
four…
sitting like brilliant comments of life,

in a brilliant light.

Oh, magic of camera, shutter/shudder/click
this moment of time, and here
I am,
damning my eyesight.

Had I known, had I eavesdropped ahead,
not hearing steer or clear of others
slogging through
snow or crunch of ice,
covering their song,

I might have heard their voice,
yet,
they watched me, unknowing of them…

realizing only now, relying too much
on a shutter’s speed of technology.

God, give me back my senses…
let me live the life you planned,

let the cardinal give me a closer view
of redbirds in snowy pine.

that's a cool line. the poem's cool too, but that there's what sticks to me.

Oh, lovely!

You know, when we had all that ice junk here last week, my son and I noticed, simultaneously, that there were red birds in both the front and back yards.  Not just one or two...several pairs of them.  It was sleeting, still, and that seemed to make them more happy.  We watched for the longest time as they played in the cold.

I wonder, do they love the coolness of winter that much...or is there some meaning I was supposed to gather from seeing such beauty in the midst of the gray?

Enjoyed reading your poem and seeing your view today!
