While She Sleeps

She casts her play-pretties about the drive,
bringing about an impetuous waste where
structure once reigned. I watch her at this sport
and sigh heavily. A tear speechlessly

falls from my eye. Once again it will fall
upon me to effect symmetry from
the unpleasantness she is making. For
a span I watch her, anticipative

that she will weary. When she does I rise
to my feet and heat the kettle. I can
hear her yowling as if a banshee and
I want to shriek, "You're a spoiled brat," but I

do not. What good would it do? None! She's as,
"deaf," as the dead. Grinning I stir the cream
and sugar into my coffee. Here at
least is a modest measure of comfort.

Desirously I gather the mug
into my hands and draw the heat from it.
I can feel the tepidness rippling to
fingers inflexible and cold with age.

Within the stretch of a heartbeat she falls
silent and I know my time has arrived.
Gathering my will I pull on my coat
and boots. It's time to scoop out the driveway.

Remember, if you're not part of the future, you're history!

Wow, what a good write.  A portrait of "winter" for sure!

I didn't see the ending coming. Lots of inner sadness reflected in this poem. Well written.
