I am beginning to wonder
if I was better off
before I began to think of friends
as something more
than what I'd learned of them
many years ago when I was young,
and had been taught to think of them
as nothing more or less
than useful acquaintanceships
which had not yet ended in betrayal,
and it had never dawned on me,
until a decade or so ago,
to see them as anything more
than social decorations
amongst other superficial trappings
of a busy life.

Those early years were,
of course,
a time of strife,
of blood and horror,
and choreographed acts
of planned out patriotic violence;
I must be getting careless in old age
to think that people
would be what they say,
invest in memory
or stay around to play,
allow a simple visit
or just stop by to say hello,
from time to time.

I used to tell myself
the odds on choices were
the most important person
I would ever meet in life
might not even have been born yet;
I would have even placed an odds on bet
that I'd find others with whom I could be quiet,
because talking would simply be redundant
and time spent sensing one another's presence
was enough.
It's a tough lesson at my age
to learn that I could be so wrong.

"because talking would simply be redundant
and time spent sensing one another's presence was enough."

Yes, yes, yes!!!

Icy, this brings up something that has been bothering me.  Since I was little, I have had to rely on my intuition to surmise the moods of others.  Over the years, I have gotten pretty good at it...and yet find that most people deny how they feel.  Why???  I just don't get it...

I am done rambling in your thread..

You always make me think and ponder...

you rock!

With a two-digit IQ, this friend of mine couldn't have known or comprehended... /pip/Forum88/HTML/000231.html

....but I have a feeling you've known more than you've let yourself know, and been more right than you would have believed then or now.

Brings to mind the old adage,
it's about the quality not the quanity.

When I was young my Mother told me that we are truly blessed
to have one or maybe two real friends in our adult life.
I couldn't comprehend that at the time, but I certainly know now what she meant.

I guess that means I'm all grown up!
Nicely done icebox~

Good point, but of late, and of finding the quiet deafening, I'm not so inclined.  At least some occasional verse, please . . .
(enjoyed the piece, of course)
