Oh the memories,  locked away...
behind those wrinkled living eyes.
Behind those lips that silently sit
in remember of what they saw.

It was friends,  loss of friends,  loss
of lives so tenderly young.  Loss of
hearts that courageously beat,  never
yielding,  no retreat.

It was fathers,  sons and daughters.  It was years
of senseless slaughters.  It was freedom that spurred
them on.....from darkness of night till redness
of dawn.

It was love of life to them.  It was revelry,
comeraderie...bright ... not dim.  It was times
pitching an old leather ball....sitting and
waiting for the next bomb's fall.

Oh the memory of shells in glow,  arcing the skies
of water's foam.  Of horrendous noise and fright
of eyes,  wondering where their doom might roam.

It was their courage,  their youth and right stuff.
Those men of that age,  soft voices...once gruff.

They live,  they lie,  they die each day....one
more memory erased,  taken away.  They lie within
that hallowed ground....Oh Lord,   just let them
have but one,  just one more round...

To all who served and died....to those who live
in silence....never sharing....living that horror
to their death...  To my father,  who I love
so dearly....as his eyes speak heavily of those
days...

Barry

Your words speak volumes - many men cannot talk about what they went through.  You have captured it all.  Nicely done.

I've seen those days remembered in eyes even when the voice denies their presence and pretends to focus on the now... this is excellent!

The meter of this write carried the music of the noble drum so well Mag.  You have such insight and compassion in your portrayal of these years...and their endless touch to all of us. TD

Hello Barry

A wonderful piece of writing.  Your words chilled me to the bone and I felt like I was there.  Your words are a fabulous testament to those who went through so much.

Take care......Sue

(big angel hugs) Oh Barry, I pray for those in service everyday and the families who have to endure losses of their own sons and daughters in the service! (sad sigh) They should never have had to go there but they did and they must be supported to the fullest extent! God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Barry, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Magnus, this is an important poem and you honor veterans well.  I was immediately reminded of a man that roamed the streets of the small neighboring town near where I lived as a child.  He shook from the shock of bombs blasting in WWI -- I did not understand -- Mom told me it was shell shock.  That was the image I saw.  Now, I see veterans at the street corners, begging for money and I wonder, what in the world???  How can things come to this?  Our veterans need assistance!  Didn't mean to get on a bandstand, but your poem was effective!

We must never forget what they gave to us.  We owe them so much..remembering is a small thing to do in return.  Well done Barry.

Magnus...A tremendous poem. A tribute to all those who have served, will serve and are serving in the armed forces. My son was in Kuwait getting ready to be deployed to Iraq with his hospital unit. On the eve of his deployment, another hospital unit arrived and were deployed, instead. We all know the dangers over there and the terrible loss of lives for our young servicemen. But we often forget how much those before them lost. That is what I think most important about your poem...remembering the heroes of the past, as well as the heroes of the present. ***Ivy Rose
