How can a word so full of life feel so empty?
Oh, how I’ve longed for a mother’s love
The feel of a mother’s touch
To have her fingers caress my face as they wipe away a tear

I long to hear her words of wisdom
The advice of age and experience
I miss the correction, the discipline
The games, toys and late night talks

Wasn’t that what it was supposed to be,
A mother who would become a friend to me
That’s what I wanted all of my life

I never had a mother I could call a friend
My mother’s gifts were guilt and rejection
Fear and loneliness filled her heart
Her legacy was hatred and pity

No words of wisdom to carry me through
Only scars of rejection across my memories

I missed my mother, though I knew her not
I wonder if she ever missed me too

I hope this isn't a personal experience but it it is I know all those feelings having grown up with a mother that was hospitalized a good deal of the time. Email me if you would like to talk I really like your poetry.
