Gold-
“Gilded.” you corrected me.
But I assured you
You glistened
Could you not see?
I found that hard to believe
For it was painfully
Obvious to me
You swore up and down
“Scratch this surface away
  Then tell me I shine.”
And so I did and
I told you
“If you truly believe that
You are varnished, I cannot
Convince you otherwise.”
Oh, how I tried regardless
But like a firefly
Trapped in my jar
You refused to glow
Until let out
Once again
Into summer’s clean air.
