She explained love to him one night
Once the bottle had been half emptied
And her tongue had been liberated
From the confinement of sobriety
He watched her lips move
As she spoke in almost a whisper
Like it was her own little secret
But secretly she wanted everyone to know,
“Love is the ocean on a clear summer night
It is the moon’s pull on the water. . .”
He furrowed his brow in a look of confusion
Because he had seen the ocean
But had yet to see a love that compared.
“Love is feeling all of this beauty
And knowing that you alone do not deserve it.”
And he saw the moon’s reflection in her eyes
And he felt autumn’s air against his skin
And he heard music from another room
And he spoke ever so softly,
“I do not deserve it.”
