SLAVERY
By: Olia Levin
11/12/03

One hot and smoldering southern day
The sun melted the morning frost along the way
Ol Freddy was picking cotton when the master came out
Masters’ drunk and filled with rage, wonder what this is all about
Next minute or two ol Freddy was knocked off his feet
His hands tied back the master began to beat
Blows into his head, a blow in to his chest
Only because Ol Freddy wasn’t doing his best.
Ol Freddy was born into this kind of captivity
Where they beat him everyday, to us its know as slavery.

Today I write on behalf of a friend
Who smoked and drank until the end
It started the day he went to high school
And joined the cool guys just to be cool
To impress the girls he started to drink
Wasted his life on parties he didn’t even think
The next day they found, an open door
And there he was, dead right on the floor
He wasn’t born into this kind of captivity
But he chose the alcohol to push him into slavery.

Its her 21st birthday what will she do
She planted herself a party and invited her friends too
She was seen as an outcast who fell into captivity
When she first tried the drug that pulled her into slavery
She became addicted to point it was every day
This drug was killing her inside but she didn’t care anyway.
She thought she had a life because now she fits in
When really in reality her life is very thin
The drug became a trap that caught her wave by wave
And she made sure that she caught each one just like a slave.

So when we hear the word slavery we only think of one thing
All those stories that we have heard long ago are bound with in
Our hearts and minds think slavery is a black person picking cotton
Being beaten for no cause at all this happens today so often
I watch people smocking and drinking all the way
But what are they gonna do when die one day
What will you think and what will you do?
Because Gods’ going to judge both me and you.
Sin addicting it holds you in captivity
And if you sit down and really think about it, that is real slavery.

well i tried to make it more of a song but i guess it didnt work well. im still thinking about adding changes to the poem. I never really thought of slavery in such a way of how i wrote it out to be in this poem untill i saw a really good short film about it. You can become a slave to anything that is addicting and sex and money fall into that too. its the more you do it with out stopping your pretty much enslaved into it.

I liked this a lot! Slavery is a lot of things, and you showed that well. Hopefully someone will read it and think seriously about their life. Very good job here!

this was really amazing, i especially liked the way you explored the different aspects of slavery, it was well thought out and very articulate, it's a shame that some still only think that what happened to our ancestors is the only form of slavery, any  time one prostitutes themself to something, no matter what it is, it's still a form of slavery, as far as I am concerned, we are all slaves, we are living for something, or someone, in some cases it could be a good thing but in other cass it might be a bad thing, but this was a really awesomr write and I enjoyed every line, thanks for the great read.
