I.
Darkness--utter darkness
Lights
Artificial
(I know the feeling)
Shining like a champion over an enemy
Or rather a enemy which defeats you by losing.
Do I dare pour myself into this?
Do I dare?
Basil Hallward points and stares
His picture has too much of me.
I have lost my reason
Like Don Quixote
Living in a fantasy
Chanting victimae paschalis
I am the great and courageous knight
I myself am the victim.

II.
Deathbed conversion
Like none other.
I awake-- to experience a real resurrection
Death comes to us all; but the mighty
And courageous knight
Defeats that old foe with swords as thin as paper
Lances as long as the brain can unwind
Fantasy-- with legends, saints and miracles-- poison like fever
No-- I am not a  great and noble knight
Zarathustra has spoken
Human--utter human
Imperfected beauty found within a shattered glass basket that smells a little like urine
Inter faces et urinam nascimur
It needs to be washed

III.
Who shall I give my kingdom to?
I spent my last twenty dollars on a bottle of booze
Dulcinea enters
A haggard old witch
This isn’t the first time she has shunned me
My fight has just begun
If only I had won
If only I had one

Maybe I just don't understand it?

I dunno lovie. I can't even figure out what's going on in here.

I'm known to be a bit dim though.

She past you, but doesn't notice you.
Drained from emotion
she waits till death grasps her.
She faces it with no fear but rather welcomes it.

Thank you for the feedback.

Obviously the poem means something different to each person. Let me offer some interpretation.

Don Quixote was a story of a man who lost his reason because he spent all his life reading stories about knights. He was convinced he was a knight, when in fact he had lost his reason. In the end he has a deathbed conversion and becomes a christian.

Duclenia is the woman whom Don Quixote loves.

Basil Hallwarth is the painter in Oscar Wilde's only novel The Picture of Dorian Grey. He paints a beautiful picture of a young Dorian, but doesnt want to display it because his painting reveals too much about himself.

Zarathustra is the name of the main character in the work of Nietzche where God is proclaimed dead and the doctrine of the overman (ubermench... spelling?) is explained.

"Inter faces et urinam nascimur" means "We are born inbetween feces and urine." It is a quote of St. Augustine, refering to the baseness of human sexuality.

Victimae Paschalis is a chant sang in the Catholic Church on Easter meaning "To the paschal victim  (let us sing)"

And Victima Rationis means: Victim of Reason.

Hope this helps.

Max
