Quickly bring up the mask
Don’t let them see your face
With tears streaming down
While betrayal settles into place

Retreat behind the mask
For emotions must be kept apart
So no notice is brought
To your weeping and shattered heart

The mask, a refuge,
A cage.
Safe from the outside world
But inside, a war does wage
Where Hurt and Anger swirl
In a deadly dance

Hurt screams
“Learn your lesson
Let not the mask slip
Dropped once before
‘Twas your heart which did rip”

Trapped behind a mask
Lonely in crippling isolation
To scared to be loved
No room for its completion

Too lonely, too scared
Cannot stand it anymore!
Something must give
In this unending war

The mask crumbles apart
Your life, your sanity depart
Frozen out, blocked out
Confusion reigns
Where depression remains

The walls are down
The fortress conquered
Disorder and pain stain the walls
Displaying mute evidence of a soul tortured

Your emotions sway free in the wind
As you stand
Scared and shaken, not knowing where to start
While slowly, with eyes to the stained walls, love flows in
Painstakingly piecing together your shattered heart
Showing you where to begin.
