it was autumn and you’d come again
in fever pitch with carpet bag
to pin our future on your storyboard.
you painted scenes in summer colors
we had no words or names for
and drew us in as shapes
unfamiliar to our eye without the brokenness.
you washed each frame with camomile
and varnished it with mother’s milk,
squared the corners, trimmed torn edges,
and stuck the fantasy to a cork board
with tacks and pins that hurt like hell,
then disappeared as carelessly as a gypsy moth
leaves the destruction it inflicts.
