They loved Mahler, Vaughn Williams,
the Kotzschmar and read
Leaves of Grass to the wind
on Bigelow mountain
sunned on Long Island's deserted
white sand beach
and named the stars
for each other
on the last ferry home.

They captured their world
in award winning photographs -
wildflowers, seascapes,
and winter's cold white surrender,
climbed Katahdin
to a surreal, untouchable universe
until the snow fell.

For 40 years they lived
in a garret under eaves
of hemlock and elm
where whispers condemning
as sin the love of one man
for another
were stilled by a wind
as soft as the first snowfall on Bigelow
or the touch of a lover's
final farewell.

(for C in memory of E)
