In a state of limbo

Driving down the highway,
A madman on wheels,
Shifting gears and feeling free,
While confusing fake for real.
Hang a right,
Make a left,
It’s all in sight,
My thoughts are deft,
As nimble as the vehicle,
Bereft as it is of gas.

I open the window to let in the cold air,
I let it blow in my newly cut hair,
I shift gears,
Ease the seat back,
Set my hand on the wheel,
And instinctively steer.

The drive leaves me time to ponder,
Wander through my memories,
All those times I fumbled for the ball,
All of those missed opportunities,
And now the ball is mine,
Just need to run,
I think I am on to something,
And I find that I am stunned.

I turn down the main artery towards my home,
I regret the fact that I have spent this drive alone,
This car will be my tomb,
This car will be my womb,
My refuge against the biting world,
While I sit inside and fume.

From melting snow,
To dangerous ice,
Gentle rain,
Against all advice,
I drive this thing night and day,
Until my heart’s content.
