It was last Christmas
a dark windy cold day
leaving the mall after shopping
I saw him near my car

He was a haggard old man
dressed in rags
a long dirty brown trench coat

His hair and beard were a yellowish gray
his eyes were sunken and seemed glazed
his shoes didn't match
his belt made from rope

He was pushing a shopping cart
perhaps filled with all his belongings
I noticed some teeth were missing
other's blackened from tobacco

He seemed to shy away from me
as if I posed a threat
as if I would hurt him
or steal something from his cart

I just said hello, my name is John
and put my hand out to shake his
in a very shallow voice
he murmured his name.... Walker
as he reached out to return the shake

As we shook hands
Walker could feel something in mine
he opened his wrinkled palm
and saw a wadded hundred dollar bill

Voiceless, Walker just looked at me
and with a tear in both his eyes
I simply said
Merry Christmas Walker
then walked away

Driving home I thought
I didn't make Walker's day
Walker had just made mine
