              Nightmares

Sleep, that hellish pit that I do loathe
Filled with dreams that lead to where;
A bleak desert of grief stained sand
Blown by winds of fearful despair.

Caught in its grasp of abysmal desire
A shoreless sea where horror teems,
As Death’s cold torpor invades my soul
God’s stormy finger above me screams.

An open doorway, icy cold
Where phantoms beckon with spectral calls,
And deranged laughter echo’s round
From Hell’s bloodstained, hideous walls.

As anguish and hope tug me awake
And terror slowly drains from my mind,
I realize with somber conviction
Bliss and horror are strangely entwined.
